Newspapers Distributed City of Sparks Project Impact Project Impact Partners Publish Two Unique Newspapers For Youth Featuring Disaster Preparedness Information March 2002 - The two Project Impact youth disaster newspapers, "Be Ready News" and "Project Impact News" were developed in cooperation by numerous state (both Nevada & California) county and federal agencies - a definite collaborative effort. They were also reviewed by numerous Project Impact partners, that have worked with the Project Impact campaign in the past, and a number of other new Project Impact participants - many in the field of education. Needless to say, these papers were developed in the true spirit of Project Impact - doing a lot with very little. Many of those involved provided information and review (as a partner) and received no compensation. Others, who worked long and hard, received a small financial token for their involvement. A special thanks should also go out to Dee Beaugez, Safe School Committee Chairman and Newspaper Project Coordinator; Vickee Greer; County Public Health Educator, Sierra County Health & Human Services (who contributed hundreds of hours of editing and coordination); Linda Gardner Brodsky, Washoe County Deputy District Attorney; Gudrun Ongman, author and owner of Mind Castle Books, Inc. (who assisted in the concept plan for the "Be Ready News"); Linda Wicksten (who assisted in edit review); and Judy Henderson, former Director of Emergency Services, American Red Cross, Sierra Nevada Chapter (who assisted in the edit review); and numerous others.Artist Patti Lowry-Parrish provided the use of her original art work for this project and Vickee Greer (First Impressions Plus) contributed outstanding original disaster photography that has helped make this publication truly original in nature. Vickee also contributed hundreds of hours in the creative coordination for the project, research, writing and the development of many articles. Both newspapers were developed primarily by volunteers - those in the community that have a desire to assist educate our children for their protection. Without the volunteers, the City of Sparks Project Impact campaign could not have afforded to bring this project to the community. The newspaper for the elementary school children was developed to provide disaster stories and information relevant to that age group, but is also intended for teachers and parents to assist in the learning process due to the reduced reading skills for the younger children. Suggested lesson plans are being provided to teachers in the Washoe County School District and for others that will not be receiving a hard copy, we will be posting both papers on the www.disasterplans.com web site. The newspaper for the middle and high school aged children is more
advanced, but should be easily understood by that age group. If you have any comments, please e-mail Dee Beaugez, Chairman of the City of Sparks Project Impact Safe Schools Committee.
